Our exhibit, Caption Me, Describe Me, lets you try your hand at captioning, describing, or just having fun with adding text to a series of short video clips. In addition to our interactive workstations,  We worked with Fireweed Media to produce a short video on the history of captioning, and captioned the exhibit's ASL videos. The Deaf Culture Centre is located in Toronto's Distillery District.

Inclusion Matters

We Want to Make Your Web Videos Accessible

image of Martin Luther King with caption- with this faith, we will be able to transformHow much video do you have on your web site? Is your media inclusive of people with hearing loss or who are blind, or anyone without access to the sound or visual?

Did you know that accessibility legislation is being enacted both locally and internationally? With an estimate 90% of internet content becoming video based by 2012, there's a lot to be done.

We offer a range of options, including training and support so you can do the work in-house if you prefer.

Martin Prosperity Institute Releases Commissioned Report on AODA's Economic Impact

The economic impact of the AODA  is something that everyone is concerned about. Some businesses and organizations may feel that the AODA Standards present too great a burden, while others recognize new business opportunities that are being presented.

On Monday, June 14th, prosperity economists Alison Kemper and Kevin Stolarick from the Martin Prosperity Institute of the Rotman School of Management at University of Toronto and Jutta Treviranus, Director of OCAD University's newly inaugurated Inclusive Design Institute (IDI) talked about their just released report.

Accessible Media Is Smart Advertising

You can reach everyone by making your media inclusive of people with hearing loss or who are blind, or anyone without access to the sound or visual of your media. Check our top ten reasons to caption and describe the videos on your website.

An advertising campaign recently launched by the Turespaña Travel agency caught our attention. Turespaña used open captions in a short streaming video advertisement entitled "I Need Spain" that appeared on CNN's home page. With the open captions, people can "see" the dialog without having to turn on the audio. This is a great example of inclusive design and good marketing.

Charles Beer's Independent Review of AODA Published - Changes Ahead

On Monday, May 31, 2010, Madeleine Meilleur, Minister of Community and Social Services, presented Charles Beer's Independent Review of the AODA at the provincial legislature. Due to concerns from businesses and municipalities, the next three standards - Information and Communications, Employment and Transportation standards - will become a single regulation. We're watching this development with interest and will be sharing our impressions as we learn more.

Panel Discussion on the Proposed Information and Communication Standard

At last year's Aiming for Accessibility conference we captioned a fascinating panel discussion that focused on "Advancing Accessibility in a World of Competing Interests and Limited Resources".  The discussion covered the proposed Information and Communication Standard of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), and accessibility in educational settings in particular. You can watch the captioned discussion panel video on the A4A web site.
